outside of asia. this event here attracts 1500 runners and benefits the ymca's youth and teen programs. i am live with jennifer from ymca, chain gnawtown and she will tell us more about the event. >> good morning. >> this is what we are doing over 35 years. and it is a great event. a lot of youth and families come out. it is a really great route. it goes through the market and back on the street. benefits the teen and youth programs. they get financial assistance and at the y, we have a huge community center where it helps kids, for a place to hang out and everything. we have a lot of runners that come out. over 1500 runners. >> over 300 volunteers that come out. >> chinese new year is a big deal here in san francisco. >> yes, it is a g deal. a lot of people that come here. immigrants that come here.

>> thanks, lorraine. >> this is a look at the route. this is where lorraine was. it will go through the north beach and embark kerr row. and between here and the san francisco zoo is holding an event. the zoo is holding its luna new year's celebration. it features chinese acrobatic performances and folk line dancing and scavenger hunt throughout the park. this is in the year of the snake. san francisco's chinatown will celebrate the year of the snake with the new year parade next weekend. it is known for its elaborate floats and costumes. it is considered the largest celebration of chinese culture outside of asia. you can watch the parade right here on ktvu, it is starts at on february 23 at 6:00 p.m.

two people were injured. it happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. it was heading to sausalito to san francisco with five people on board. the small boat slammed into the side of it. two men in the 60s on the small boat had to be rushed to the hospital. >> i was standing outside and i could see the boat just right down where i was standing. and i could see the people. just lying there. >> there was a doctor and nurse on the ferry at the time. they rushed to help the two injured men. cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> oakland place are looking for suspects. it happened at 5:00 yesterday evening. a man was shot several times and he was pronounced dead on the scene. hours earlier, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death just blocks from the oakland police headquarters. >> new investigation into the

right down where i was standing, and i could see these people. and just lying there. >> there was a doctor and a nurse on the ferry at the time, who rushed to help the two injured men. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. ferry service will run as usual today. bart employees are missing so much work it's apparently costing the agency millions of dollars. according to the san francisco examiner, an average of 1 in 8 bart workers doesn't show up to work each day. train operators and station agents have the most unscheduled absences. bart has to pay other workers overtime to fill in. that costs about $14 million extra a year. starting today, bart passengers can expect some delays on sundays, because of track maintenance. the work is being done every sunday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., up until march 17th. service between the 24th street station and daly city and some transfers on the blue line will be affected. new information this morning about the murder investigation into olympic athlete oscar pistorius. south african police say they

weather over san francisco at this hour. and a nice looking day for your afternoon. cold weather returns early next week. the extended forecast is coming up. two texas firefighters have died after being severely burned in a fire. officials say friday's fire at the knights of columbus hall in bryan, texas was so intense it caused the roof to collapse. two other firefighters were also treated for burns, but are expected to survive. >> the city of bryan is suffering a huge loss here overnight through emergency fire operation. >> one of the firefighters has been identified as 36-year-old lieutenant eric wallace. he leaves behind a wife and five children. survivors of a deadly rhode island nightclub fire are marking 10 years since the tragedy. 100 people were killed when pyrotechnics for the band great white started a fire at the station nightclub in west warwick back in 2003. the names of the dead will be read aloud at a service later this afternoon. at the site of the fire. officials say they are working

to raise funds to built a permanent memorial. san francisco muni officials say a woman is in a hospital after being hit by a muni bus. that accident happened yesterday afternoon. the victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. the muni driver is undergoing standard drug and alcohol tests. two stockton teenagers died after leading the c.h.p. on a high speed chase. the highway patrol says officers started pursuing the car because it was passing vehicles using the left turn lane. that high-speed pursuit lasted about a minute and ended when the 13-year-old driver lost control, hit a light pole and crashed into a wall. both the driver and his 15-year- old passenger died. an anti jobbing antioc man is recovering after driving his brand new harley davidson motorcycle through that wall, his neighbor's home. the man told investigators he was just trying to ride that motorcycle super bowl the garage, but then the throttle got -- that motorcycle into the

garage but the throttle got stuck and it sent him and his motorcycle across the lawn through a fence into a wall. crews are now pile driving, and that means drilling at least 150 feet into the ground to secure the building. the noisy portion of the process is expected to be completed this month. the new store is scheduled to open near the richmond san rafael bridge in october. alameda county is looking to make a road connecting 580 and 680 a little safer. 93 accidents have been reported in the past four years on crow canyon road between castro valley and san ramon. one stretch of the roadway is even referred to as dead man's curve, due to the number of crashes there. the first of several public meetings, residents said speed limits need to be lowered. many also recommended installing rumble strips, more traffic light, stop signs and a center turn lane. filling up the gas tank continues to come at a high cost. according to aaa gas prices have gone up 12 cents since last weekend. the increase is again being blamed on rising oil prices.

now 2013 is the year of the snake, and in the chinese horoscope, people born this year are great communicators, but it is believed they can also be cold and calculating. just so you know, some famous people born the year of the snake include oprah winfrey, j.f.k., abraham lincoln, picasso, mlk, jr., howard stern and kanye west. the race as we said just finished and people are partying right now in portsmouth square, of course. this one of many events here in san francisco where the year of the snake and chinese new year is the biggest in the nation. live in san francisco, lorraine blanco. people were seriously hurt after their small boat crashed right into a packed ferry. it happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the ferry was heading from sausalito to san francisco with 500 people on board when the small boat slammed right into the side of it. everyone on the ferry was ok. but two men in their 60s on that small boat were rushed to the hospital.

the cause of that crash is still under investigation. ferry service will run as usual today. san francisco police are asking for your help to find a missing man. 20-year-old christian hughes flew up from san diego on february 4th to visit a friend, and he was supposed to fly home last thursday but no one has seen or heard from him in more than a week. his mother is in the bay area trying to search for him, and yesterday she passed out flyers with his friends in the bay view near the area he had been staying with a friend. >> we don't want to think that anything bad has happened, but he has been missing for a week now and we can only hope that's not the case. >> both san diego police and san francisco police are searching for hughes. he is 5' 8, weighs 130 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair. anyone with information about him is asked to call police. oakland police are looking for suspects in two separate deadly attacks. the latest happened around 5:00 last night. the man was shot several times on eighth and peralta streets in west oakland. he was pronounced dead at the scene. hours earlier, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death just 3

blocks from oakland police headquarters. friends and family of the petaluma teenager who died in the snow after a new year's eve concert in lake tahoe are using their story to help others. the family of 19-year-old alyssa byrne has announced they'll use the money donated to launch a public service campaign promoting a buddy system. the family says they want teens to travel in groups to stay out of danger. byrne had gone to at that although with three friends and left a music festival on her own. she was found three days later in a snowbank by a utility worker. in sub freezing temperatures, thousands of relief workers are helping victims of the russian meteor. the central russian city is being called the city of broken glass. the meteor blew out the windows to more than 40-buildings, and they estimate the blast as strong as 20 atomic bombs. >> i told them to move from the windows and not long after that the meteor exploded. they were all fine.

san francisco. going to be a gorgeous day to be outdoors. san jose 64, mid 60s los gatos, 65 santa cruz. even a bit above average for this time of year. the cooling trend will take us below average as early as tomorrow. the increasing clouds, we'll wake up with the morning clouds and fog once again. but the increasing clouds associated with the storm coming by late monday into tuesday morning. the rain raves, lasts all day long, and then we are unsettled with cool conditions wednesday, thursday, another chance at some rain and this pattern may last into the weekend. back to you. well, new jersey firefighters plan to build 26 playgrounds in honor of the victims of the newtown shooting massacre. the playgrounds will be built in the stat hardest hit by superstorm sandy which include new york, new jersey and connecticut. each playground will bear the name of the victim and show case things that that person loved. 20 children and 6 school employees died in the sandy hook elementary shooting rampage. the jersey shore is racing to rebuild in time for the summer tourist season.

several ball fields and the a's were earlier this morning at the phoenix municipal stadium where they actually play their exhibition games. we had an opportunity to interview many of the players here. as you can see, also, a lot of japanese reporters and camera men. they're here for the oakland a's new short top, hero nakagima. as you can see, also, starting to bring supplies in here. this is where they will practice starting roughly 11:00. it's kind of a strange dynamic that they have here. they get dressed over at the municipal stadium. the phoenix municipal stadium which is two miles away. then they come here and practice here at popogo park. it's a beautiful facility as we said. the team, a new look for them. when we get to doing some stories here, you'll see that about 10 of the players are sporting beards. i mean full man-on beards here. including josh reddick, who's got one of those lumber jack

beards. it's a new look that the ever- changing oakland athletics is trying to start up this year. we talked to a lot of players. they all seem very optimistic. everyone talks about the anaheim angels loading up, the texas rangers. people forget, this is the american league west division champs who took the detroit tigers to five games in the american league division series last year. there is a few of the players coming out. again practice is officially starting at 11 owe5 and we'll have to move over here as more people come in to this site here. again, the oakland athletics, this is their first full teamwork-out today. it is here in phoenix. ironically, mike and claudine, the a's are actually going to leave this facility next year, and move to mesa. in the spring of 2015. it's such a beautiful place and

starting at 9:00. the prices are rising due to higher corn cost and rising department from overseas. analysts say many grocery chains are trying to keep prices down with smaller packages. that means choice cuts that have been traditionally sold in the 16 ounce package are now offered as 12 ounces for the same price. beef prices are expected to increase as much as 10% by the summer. b.m.w. is recalling nearly 570,000 vehicles to fix faulty battery cables. the recall affects 2007 to 2011. three series sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes. also on the recall list, 2008 to 12, 1 series coupes and convertibles and the sports car. the company says faulty cables can cause the engines to stall. owners can contact their local bmw dealer with any questions. christer will is also recalling -- chrysler is also recalling 300,000 vehicles because of problems with a rear axle component that can cause drivers to lose control. the recall affects twin to 2012
